DeviantART is, arguably, one of the most popular art sites in the contemporary art community. The site is built as a showcase for artists who want to display their work for others to see and features everything from traditional visual arts to literature and cartoons and comics. Many budding artists use DeviantART to display work that, for whatever reason, they have chosen not to display on their own sites or in galleries.

The DeviantART website was created by Scott Jarkoff, Matt Stephens and Angelo Sotira in August of 2000. How the site came into creation is a long and complicated story that involves Michael Ovits and many other sites that were all a part of a single media company. DeviantART started out as a "skin" site—a site for which people could submit their own skins for WinAMP and other things. The site quickly grew in popularity and eventually, when the other sites started failing, DeviantART became the baby of Jarkoff, Stephens and Sotira.

The site is wildly popular with more than eight million members and almost one hundred thousand submissions. The site gets an average of eighty thousand hits a day from people making, submitting or seeking art.

When a person signs up to be a member of DeviantART he/she is given a user page that can be used at the user's discretion. Some people use their user pages simply as a place to display their work. Others use the site as a form of social networking—like a MySpace for artists. The user pages can be customized to reflect just about anything the user wants and it is this level of usability and control that keeps the site popular. While there is a limit to how many folders a user can have in the DeviantART gallery, there do not seem to be limits upon what can be displayed in the user's folders.

In addition to simply displaying works of art, DeviantART also has an online store through which shoppers can buy prints of the art they like as well as having that art printed onto a variety of things like coffee mugs, calendars, magnets, mouse pads, jigsaw puzzles, etc. It is a great place to shop for that person who is way too hard to shop for in a "regular" store.

Another feature that makes the DeviantART community so popular is the forums. In the forums people can discuss everything from specific artists and artist media to different movements or current events. It is a thriving community that the administrators and members work hard to keep peaceful and interesting for anybody who wants to join in.

This sort of site is just what the internet needs. It is a great place for people who want to be able to display and sell their art and other work but who don't want to or might not be able to trek all over the place begging galleries or publishers to work with them. It is a great interactive community that everyone should check out.
